What did you do today?

Almost everyday whether it be my husband, a family member or a friend, I get asked the question "What did you do today?" and so often I don't have a very good answer. I think back on the day and nothing really sticks out. I made and ate breakfast and lunch. I might have given Claire a bath. I got ready for the day. I did some chores around the house. None of these things seem like a satisfactory reply. Sometimes I simply reply with "I took care of Claire." This is, in fact, exactly what I did. Before this question was easy to answer because the answer was always the same. I went to work. But now it just doesn't seem so simple. Now this question seems a bit judgemental or accusatory. I hear it as "What DIDN'T you do today?" because I didn't go to work, I didn't get a long list of things crossed off my to-do list and I didn't do anything that would truly impress someone.
Although when I really think about it what I did, however unimpressive it might be to someone on the outside, was very important. I loved on my little girl. I made her feel like she is the most important person in the world to me and I taught her life skills like, how to show how much you care about someone, how to share and how to be patient. It may seem insignificant but to Claire it is not. To her it is extremely important. The more unproductive my day is the better hers is because time spent with me without the distraction of my to-do list is her favourite thing in the world. So the next time someone asks me what I did that day, I probably won't say it out loud but in my heart I will know that I did the most important job I could have possibly done and that is good enough.

  1. Well said! I completely agree, you keep on doing the most very important ever. Your reward is in Heaven and you'll never regret pouring yourself into you kids.
